Tablet in the form of a capsule, coated from light reddish brown to dark reddish brown biconvex film coat, with a break line on one side and smooth on the other side

Pharmacological actions

The drug exhibits anthelmintic activity. Albendazole affects the polymerization of β-tubulin, stops it. As a result, there is a violation of the formation of microtubules in the intestines of helminths, the ability of worms to absorb glucose is suppressed, the normal intracellular migration of organelles, and the synthesis of ATP in their muscle tissue are blocked. The creation of a therapeutic concentration of albendalosis leads to the death of helminths.

The drug is active against adults and larval forms. Albendazole causes the death of nematodes (Necatoramericanus, Strongyloidesstercoralis, Enterobiusvermicularis, Trichuristrichiura, Ascarislumbricoides, Cutaneous Larva Migrans, Ancylostomaduodenale), cestodes (porcine, bovine and dwarf chainworms), trematodes

 

Indications for use

Albendazole is prescribed for:

– neurocysticercosis;

– echinococcosis of the peritoneum, liver, lungs;

– contraindications to surgery for cystic echinaccoccosis;

– the need for surgical intervention for cystic echinaccoccosis to reduce the number of cysts;

– arachnoid, intragastric, racemose cysts;

– ascariasis;

– trichonosis;

– enterobiasis;

– hookworm disease;

– opisthorchiasis;

– giardiasis;

– microsporidosis;

– toxocariasis;

– gnatostomosis;

– trichinosis;

– capillarosis;

– mixed helminthiasis.

 

Method of administration and dosage

Albendazole is prescribed orally, after meals. The tablets are washed down with water. The table shows dosages depending on the pathology. Taking laxatives after taking Albendazole is not necessary.

Side effects

Taking Albendazole may be accompanied by undesirable effects:

– leukopenia;

– pancytopenia;

– headache;

– thrombocytopenia;

– agranulocytosis;

– dyspepsia;

– an increase in the activity of liver transaminases;

– abdominal pain;

– dizziness;

– meningeal symptoms;

– every itch;

– hyperthermia;

– urticaria;

– alopecia (reversible);

– hypertension;

– impaired renal function.

 

 

 

Contraindications

Albendazole is not prescribed for:

– helminthiasis in children under 2 years of age;

– hypersensitivity to albendazole;

– pregnancy;

– lactation.

With caution when:

– pathologies of the retina against the background of cysticercosis;

– cirrhosis of the liver;

– oppression of bone marrow hematopoiesis.

Pregnancy: Albendazole is categorically contraindicated in pregnancy, suspected pregnancy.

 

Drug interactions

The plasma concentration of albendazole is increased by praziquantel, dexamethasone, cimetidine.

 

Overdose

Excessive doses are characterized by an increase in side symptoms.
